NWA 060 CK5
(Carbonaceous Chondrite)
.
A single 604 gram stone was obtained by the Cottingham team in Morocco, August, 2000. The upper portion shows black fusion crust with the bottom covered with caliche.  The interior of this meteorite appears quite fresh!  Classification by A. Rubin.

CK5 is an extremely rare type of carbonaceous chondrite.  As a group, CK's are very few, most being quite small and not available to collectors. (CK's are petrologic type 3-6.)  A total of only 7 CK5's + one CK5-6 have ever been found.  Only one other CK5 (DaG 412, 946 g.) has been found outside of Antarctica. (Ref.: Catalogue of Meteorites, 5th Ed.; M.B. #84)  There appear to be NO other confirmed CK5 finds.
The single most important diagnostic characteristic of all CK's is the silicate-darkening due to submicron to 10 micron particles of pentlandite and magnitite found within normally clear olivine grains.   There is an abundance of small ( 0.025 to 1.0 mm) isolated olivine grains  within the matrix which consists of the above mentioned minerals.  Chondrule density is ~ 15%/vol. with diameters averaging 0.80 mm.  Most are porphyritic olivine, with some barred olivine. CK meteorites are curious as they are highly oxidized meteorites but contain pentlandite which is a reduced mineral. *
